Between 2000 and 2015, the sales volume of new textiles has nearly doubled. Cotton fibre production alone poses substantial issues due to its water consumption and its use of pesticides. If used textiles cannot be reused, they are mostly recycled and utilised for different purposes, such as the production of cleaning cloths or the usage of torn textiles as fleece products. However, for high-quality recycling it is necessary to reuse the fibres that were made for the production of textiles, as this is the only way to replace new textiles and to provide a sustainable solution for the treatment of used textiles. Individual projects for the production of new textiles through fibre recycling do exist, but these are currently limited to small-scale efforts and are based on recycling mono-material, such as production waste or jeans. Therefore, an “Extended Producer Responsibility for Textiles” is an important topic for the near future.
