The Extended Producer Responsibility Alliance (EXPRA) was founded in 2013 to promote effective and efficient EPR systems and sustainable packaging. It has produced a study outlining the core principles and practices of EPR, which are crucial for shaping and supporting effective EPR policies across Europe and worldwide. The study aims to pinpoint the key principles and conditions that drive the successful implementation and performance of EPR initiatives in different national and regional contexts. The best practices and success stories cover areas such as stakeholder involvement in policy development, Producer Responsibility Organisation governance, fee determination, compliance strategies for producers, transparency in EPR implementation, government support and monitoring, setting ambitious policy targets, extending waste collection beyond households, facilitating innovation, and involving the informal sector in EPR activities. It defines EPR as a resource management tool where producers take responsibility for the environmental impact of their products throughout their lifecycle, encompassing design, production, use and disposal. By incorporating eco-friendly design practices and promoting recycling and recovery, producers contribute to building a circular economy, minimising environmental impacts. By sharing these best practices and success stories, EXPRA seeks to advance the circular economy and foster sustainable packaging waste management systems that benefit both the environment and society.
