Over the next 1-2 years, the individual EU member states must nationally implement the common EU rules for the repair of consumer products and must also, as part of this, introduce at least one measure that encourages citizens to have defective products repaired. The EU directive provides a broad framework for the repair supporting measures the member states introduce. As inspiration for the development of repair promotion measures, inspiration can be drawn from the French experience with repair subsidies for consumers from repair funds. These funds are financed by funds that manufacturers and retailers pay to place a product on the French market. The French funds have been established under the auspices of the French schemes for extended producer responsibility (EPR), and the first funds focus on electrical and electronic products.
