CONAI and the Consortium System

Abstract/summary

CONAI, the National Packaging Consortium, is a private non-profit consortium with over 800,000 members between packaging producers and users. The consortium promotes the adoption of environment-friendly packaging at source, and then co-ordinates the recovery and recycling of packaging after use. CONAI directs the activities and guarantees the recovery results of six independent consortia: CIAL (aluminium), COMIECO (paper), COREPLA (plastic), COREVE (glass), RICREA (steel), RILEGNO (wood), ensuring the necessary links between these bodies and the public administrations. The CONAI system follows a unique management model based on the principle of "shared responsibility" which assumes the cooperation of all the participants involved in the waste management process: from companies, which produce and use packaging materials, to public administrations, which draw regulations for waste management.
